Jesse James, the sixth child of Jesse and Eva Murrah, was born
in 1928 at Muleshoe (Bailey County), Texas. He lived and worked
on the family farm and attended the Muleshoe public school
system. After graduating from Muleshoe High in 1945, Jesse
moved to Lubbock, Texas to attend Draughon's Business College
but dropped out to work full-time in the movie theatre industry.
Jesse, a confirmed bachelor, started with Lindsey Theatres in
1945 and over the next 40 years he worked in all Lubbock
theatres owned by Lindsey holding almost every position
available from doorman to projectionist to manager. He was
named assistant house manager over all five theatres in 1976
after projectors were converted to the automated platter
system. In 1982 he became manager of one of the two remaining
Lindsey theatres which were later sold to Noret Theatres.
Jesse was transferred to New Braunfels, Texas near San Antonio
in 1985 and for the next 10 years managed theatres owned by
Noret and Lone Star Theatres and then went into
semi-retirement returning to Lubbock in 1995. Jesse was still in
demand and continued to work part-time for a couple of
theatres for the next five years.
He is now permanently retired in Lubbock (except for the
occasional call for his expertise).
These pictures were taken when Jesse
rode his new scooter from Lubbock to
Muleshoe - 70 miles.
