Newton Murrah was born on February 20, 1838 in Autauga County, Alabama. Although numerous independent efforts have been made, no records have been found to identify Newton's father or in any way link him with other Murrah lines. Pendleton Murrah, Governor of Texas, is believed to have also been born in Alabama 12 years earlier. Newton served in the army of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War.

Ella Frances Rotton was born in Edgefield County, South Carolina on November 19, 1855. It is not known how Newton and Ella came to be in Texas; however, records show they were married in Houston, Harris County, Texas on December 20, 1871 and settled on a 176-acre farm 12 miles south of Iola in Grimes County, Texas. Newton also worked as a cotton gin mechanic. They had 10 children during this marriage. The ninth child was either still born or died shortly after birth. Ella's brother, Thomas, buried the baby of unknown sex on the farm.

Newton died on July 19, 1897 while living in Grimes County, Texas. He was buried at the Lake Grove Cemetery, Grimes County. Newton left his wife with nine children ranging from ages 25 to 3, including a set of 12-year-old twins. Ella eventually left Grimes County with the children still at home, relocating to Jack and Knox counties before settling in Lynn County in West Central Texas. She never remarried and spent her remaining years in Tahoka where she passed away on August 19, 1916. She was buried in the Tahoka, Lynn County, cemetery.
